There is a lot of “greenwashing” going on in the beauty industry today.
What is “greenwashing” and why is this important to be aware of? Greenwashing is when companies that aren’t fully transparent claim to use clean ingredients, but when you take a look at their labels and read the ingredients, you discover that the products actually contain chemicals. All for pure marketing of their products, can we call bull shit now?
This is a big deal to me. You see, before INDIE GOAT was created, I was in my 20’s; just starting my family & farm, suffering from skin blemishes and living a less healthy lifestyle than the one I strive to lead today. My pregnancies & diet seemed to make my blemishes worse, so I decided to try the well-known and heavily advertised synthetically-derived skincare treatment that we’ve all seen on TV. You know the one. I was desperate and the claims all promised to make my skin better. I had no idea what was in it but needed to believe it would help.
But it didn’t. It just dried out my skin and added to my frustration. I was tired. Tired of struggling with my complexion and not having confidence in my appearance. I would cover up my blemishes and red skin with makeup as this hid the flaws of my skin. But as anyone who has been in my shoes knows, this just made things worse.
This frustration and lack of options are what fueled my desire to change the beauty industry. I wanted to make an impact. I wanted to help other women to find that skin confidence that I was seeking. Damn it, I didn’t want to live like this anymore.
Filled with frustration and the desire to learn more about herbalism, natural living, and skin care ingredients, I devoted my time to researching. I discovered that there are over 1,800 chemicals banned in Europe and only 11 of those are banned in the United States. WTF! Not only is our skin care filled with nasty chemicals and preservatives that are potentially linked to infertility, skin allergies, cancer, and learning disabilities, BUT our food also contains many chemicals that have a negative impact on our bodies.
I decided then that I needed to make a change. For my health and for the health of my family. I changed our ways of eating and the skin care that we were exposed to. We went all natural and organic in food, switched our milk over to raw goat milk and threw out that nasty soap!
“Maybe I’m not the only one who wants to know what I’m putting on my body. Maybe there are others who are suffering and want to know too.”
I started building skin care recipes with plant-derived ingredients, raw goat milk and luxury oils that worked with your skin. What could be any better than this combo? It took me 2 years to get INDIE GOAT’s superior formula for our soap and skin care, but it was a goal worth accomplishing. And I thought “Maybe I’m not the only one who wants to know what I’m putting on my body. Maybe there are others who are suffering and want to know too.”
